a sigh of relief & a step forward

Since women kind of cleaned house last night in the elections and Akin and Murdock so didn’t win, I’m feeling a wave of relief I had been waiting for.

Jaded as I am, it’s time to take a minute to celebrate these victories and the small steps forward we are taking as a nation. We voted, and we said no thanks to all the men saying ridiculous horribleness about women’s bodies, rape, abortion. And I actually think young generations have some progress to look forward to. We aren’t going to outlaw gay marriage forever and ever off into the sunset. It just won’t happen. We are moving on.

We elected the first openly gay Senator! Oh Tammy Baldwin! In a lot of ways, I was more excited about that than any other aspect of the election. We are over it enough to elect a lesbian. That is a step. Seriously.

Plus, the voters all did right given the choice on gay rights:

Maine legalized gay marriage!

Washington upheld gay marriage!

Maryland upheld gay marriage!

Minnesota voted to not change the constitution to ban gay marriage.

Showtime’s Polyamory series

Very very curious to see Showtime’s new series Polyamory.

Of course there are so many ways to structure relationships, and of course a reality show about poly folks is going to have to sensationalize it. But after Sister Wives and Big Love I’m excited to see a portrayal of non-traditional relationship structures minus the religion.

So do I have to get Showtime now?

The Science Of Love

There are some who claim that science ruins the mystical excitement of this world. They claim that once you reduce everything down to atoms, and physics, and math that you have lost some essential wonder or glory or excitement. I fully reject this notion, I feel like an piece of art is even more enjoyable if you understand the chemical process of the paint, of the molecular structure of the stone. I feel that knowing more about emotions, like love, allows you to more fully appreciate the awesome grandeur of the human experience.

This video is a perfect example of that. These people are taking the ultimate in human emotion, love, and having it “reduced” to a number. Having it “diminished” to a series of electrical impulses in the brain. And far from being reduced by the process they are uplifted and enriched. Knowing that love is a series of chemical reactions in their brain, that can be reduced to a “score” did nothing to limit the joy these people felt.

In fact I would make the argument that now these people know that love is not something ephemeral, never to be understood. They know that love is real, that they can have it, and that it can exist, that is can even be measured. I think each person left that office with a sense of hope and wonder and awe. They are marveling at their own minds, and I am sure upon reflection marveling at the process that created their minds.
